Halloween
The night of goblins and witches, devils and ghosts...a night full of customs which obviously are of Satan. The day comes from ancient paganism. In honor of Samhain (another name for Satan), the lord of the dead. Yet millions observe this holiday of devils and demons by dressing up as such and going around their neighborhood asking for treats of candy or fruit, and threatening tricks if the treats aren't delivered.
Many say its tradition and they think it is all done in fun. But, have they stopped to think of what God might think of it all?
Funk and Wagnall Encyclopedia- Halloween
"Or all Hallows Eve, name applied to the evening of October 31st, preceeding the Christian festival of Hallowmas, all Hallows, or All Saint's Day. The observances connected with Halloween are believed to have originated among the ancient Druids, who believed that on the evening, Saman, the Lord of the dead; called forth hosts of evil spirits. The Druids customarily lit great fires on Halloween, apparently for the purpose of warding off these spirits.
Among the ancient Celts, Halloween was the last evening of the year, and it was regarded as a propitious time for examining the portents of the future. The Celts also believed the spirits of the dead revisited their earthly homes on that evening. After the Romans conquered Britian, they added to Halloween features of the Roman harvest festival held on November 1st in honor of Pomona, goddess of the fruits of trees.
The Celtic tradition of lighting fires on Halloween survived until modern times in Scotland and Wales and the concept of ghosts and witches is still common to all Halloween observances. Traces of the Roman harvest festival survive in the custom prevelent in both the U.S. and Britain of playing games involving fruit, such as ducking for apples in a tub of water. Of similar origin is the decorative use of Jack-o-Lanterns, or hollowed out pumpkins that are created to resemble grotesque faces and lit by candles placed inside."
The World Book Encyclopedia-Halloween
"Halloween is developed from ancient New Year festivals and festivals of the dead. The Celtic festival of Samhain is probably the source of present day Halloween. Their new year began on November 1st. A festival that began on the previous evening honored Samhain, the Celtic lord of death. The Celts believed that Samhain allowed the souls of the dead to return to their earthly homes for this evening. On the evening of the festival, the Druids, who were the priests and teachers of the Celts ordered the people to put out their hearth fires. The Druids built a huge New Years bonfire of oak branches, which they considered sacred. They burned animals, crops, and possibly even human beings as sacrifices. During the celebration people sometimes wore costumes made of animal heads and skins. They told fortunes about the coming year by examining the remains of the animals that had been sacrificed."
But what does God have to say about this? We obviously aren't supposed to follow these pagan customs.
Deut 12: 30-31
"Take heed to thyself that thou be not snared by following them, after that they be destroyed from before thee; and that thou inquire not after their gods, saying, How did these nations serve their gods? even so will I do likewise.
Thou shalt not do so unto the Lord thy God; for every abomination to the Lord, which he hateth, have they done unto their gods; for even their sons and their daughters they have burnt in the fire to their gods."
